About triliteral verbs in Somali

The aim of this paper is twofold. For one thing, I provide a representation for triliteral verbs in Somali (i.e. verbs bearing three consonants that follow the template CvCvC) which accounts for the full set of their properties. Second, the analysis of Somali triliterals will be used in order to discuss the role of corpora in phonology. In particular, I examine their construction, their exploitation and the identification of counter-examples. It will also be shown that most of the results regarding Somali triliterals that are presented below could not have been brought to light (or at least would not have been credible) without the support of computer-based tools. The last section discusses specific issues related to the construction of electronic corpora and their automatic exploitation.
